While getting ready for vacation as I promised my kids I would take them to Washington DC. I have a Sinus Infection, and my Doctor can't see me for 3 days!!! When my company told me that they were offering a new benefit – TeleMedicine – I didn't give it a second thought. Why would anybody want or need to call a doctor on the phone? Less than a week later, my son woke me up at 3:30 in the morning and told me that he hadn’t slept all night and thought that he was going to throw up. He seemed to have a fever and was crying, so I told him to get dressed and I’d take him to the Emergency Room at our local hospital. As I was getting ready to leave, I remembered the new service, and decided I had nothing to lose and called the number on the card they issued us. About 5 minutes after answering some questions about my son’s medical history, I spoke with a doctor who was… well… awesome! He was kind, seemed genuinely concerned, and listened to all that I had to say. But what really sold me was when he asked to speak with my son! After hearing my son answer a few simple questions and hearing him laugh, I knew I had found something precious. I have told all my friends, family and coworkers about this. TeleMedicine... who’d have thought it?

I woke up feeling nauseous and achy. I knew the flu was going around, and called my PCP to get an appointment. After almost 10 minutes, the receptionist came back and said they’d have to call me. About a half hour later, she called back and said the doctor was slammed and to “tough it out” – that it was probably the flu – and call back in three days if I wasn’t feeling better. THREE DAYS! By noon, I felt like I was dying, and I decided to call the telemedicine service. Wow! I spoke to a doctor (not a receptionist) in 20 minutes. Yes, it probably was the flu, and she recommended some over-the-counter meds (that I already had in the house). The peace of mind, the advice (and saving the copay) were great. I have to commute to work for almost 3 hours each way.  If I want to go to my doctor it usually means taking the entire day off.  When my summer allergies got to be more than I could bear I thought I would try the doctor by phone service that my wife signed up for.  I always thought it was a good idea for the kids but now it seemed to be a great option for me.  I went online and filled in my medical history and clicked to have a doctor call me back.  After filling in my symptoms it only took about 15 minutes I was speaking to the doctor.  He phoned in my usual inhaler and recommended an over the counter allergy med.  (last season it was only available by prescription)  I was able to pick up the meds at a pharmacy near my office during my lunch hour.  All I could think is why didn’t I try this before as my family has been using this for a couple of years.
